The story of SYL is deeply intertwined with the journey of the man behind the company. That is why we would like to introduce Mr. Avraham Gelberg.
Better known as Avi, the founder of SYL was born in Haifa, the third-largest city in Israel. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, also located in Haifa. In 1989, he moved to Brazil after meeting his wife, Denise.
Before founding his own company, Avi worked for the Iochpe-Maxion S/A business group, which operates in the auto parts and railway equipment sectors. He also served as an executive at Fundação Iochpe, an institute responsible for developing social programs focused on vocational education for underprivileged youth.
In 1996, Avi established a small group that would later become SYL. The first import operations were conducted from an office on Adolfo Gordo Street in São Paulo. The initial products included brake pads and brake shoes from internationally recognized brands.
Approximately five years later, due to the growth in import volume, inventory operations were transferred to a larger warehouse on Souza Lima Street, near the original location, while the administrative office moved to Vitorino Carmilo Street. During this period, the company expanded its portfolio to include a broader range of automotive components, such as brake discs, clutch kits, and shock absorbers.
Despite the diversified catalog, brake pads remained the company’s flagship product. In 2001, driven by increasing market demand, the SYL Group acquired a manufacturing facility in Sorocaba, in the state of São Paulo, and began producing brake pads for both domestic and imported vehicles.
In its first year of manufacturing operations, the plant produced approximately 10,000 sets per month, marking the beginning of SYL’s transformation into an industrial manufacturer. Within just two years, production capacity had nearly increased sixfold. By 2003, with output reaching approximately 60,000 sets per month, the company fully discontinued import activities and focused exclusively on brake pad manufacturing. Shortly thereafter, the brand expanded its production to include brake shoes.
From that point forward, SYL’s growth as a manufacturer accelerated. Through high-quality products, strict production standards, and continuous improvement, the company gained market recognition and strengthened its position, paving the way to becoming one of the leading companies in Brazil’s aftermarket auto parts industry. In less than five years, monthly production increased from 60,000 to 200,000 sets.
In 2008, SYL inaugurated a new, modern industrial complex, significantly expanding its facilities and increasing production capacity to 330,000 sets per month. This milestone reinforced the company’s leadership in the Brazilian aftermarket sector. Since then, SYL has continued to grow steadily and currently manufactures more than 500,000 sets per month.
Today, SYL operates internationally and is present in several countries across Latin America, the Middle East, Europe, and North America.
